Do You Have What It Takes to Be an Entrepreneur?

By admin, October 17, 2016

Entrepreneur

Entrepreneurship is an arduous process that requires a lot of stamina, commitment, charisma, business savvy, and maybe a dash of luck too.  The Business Major has become the largest field in most colleges today; everyone wants to start a business, but not everyone has what it takes to be an entrepreneur.  It takes a certain kind, and there is no question that entrepreneurship will not suit all who dare to try it.

Below we will list several qualities that may indicate that entrepreneurship is not for you.  There is no shame in deciding that a certain venture is not the right one.  That is the purpose of doing research in the first place.  However, identifying some of these qualities in yourself should not automatically be discouraging either.  Great businessmen and businesswomen are ones who rise to a challenge and bring up the best in themselves.

Start Your Business TodayPerhaps this list may serve as a measuring tool to decide whether it is worth it to you to pursue an entrepreneurial endeavor any further before you’re in too deep.  No one knows yourself better than you do.  Perhaps the following list will seem like a mirror, or perhaps we are painting a picture of a total stranger to you.

Entrepreneurship is probably NOT for those who are…

  1. Followers, Not Leaders

If you feel more comfortable taking orders or following directions rather than assuming a leadership position and having to make tough decisions, then entrepreneurship might not be for you.  Entrepreneurs are often their own boss and it takes a strong leader with resourcefulness and resilience to cut it in the business market.

  1. Pursuing Someone Else’s Dream

Maybe someone talked you into this cockamamie scheme.  Perhaps it’s the family business and somebody volunteered you for you.  Joining a partnership or getting involved in the family business can be a great opportunity at times, but if this entrepreneurial pursuit is not your dream or your passion project then it’s not a recipe for success.

  1. Don’t Want to Work Hard

It is a very competitive world out there.  Sometimes it’s not the best product that succeeds or breaks through, it the best salesperson that succeeds.  Often times the best salesperson is the one who put in the hours, made their company a passion project, and worked their fingers to the bone for one more sale.  You may find great ways to work smart, rather than hard.  But if you are not driven to work hard for your product, then you may best seek another occupation.

  1. Not Good With People

Whether your entrepreneurship is a partnership or a solo endeavor, you will still have to deal with people, because after all, you have something to sell.  If you have an agitated, impatient, argumentative, confrontational personality, then entrepreneurship might not be for you.  It may be wise to talk honestly with your close friends or relatives and ask their opinion on your social skills, or what can be improved.  There are respected personality tests available online to gauge your competence in this crucial area of entrepreneurship as well.

  1. Aren’t a Problem Solver

Entrepreneurship is largely about seeing needs and filling them.  These business people specialize in finding what’s broken and marketing a way to fix it—and push it as the next big thing!  If you aren’t a problem solver then it will be hard to make a solution to sell.  Too much optimism can hinder entrepreneurship, because you see the world as just fine, then there’s no pessimistic drive to bring a change to sell the world!
